Guide to Buying Machu Picchu Entrance Tickets Online
You can only pay for your Machu Picchu tickets online using a VISA credit or debit card and your card must be affiliated with Verified by Visa. During the payment process you will be redirected to the official Visa secure payment website and after entering your card details you will then be asked to enter your Verified by Visa security PIN so have these details handy. You cannot use any other type of credit card, unfortunately VISA have the monopoly on this. You can choose the website language by clicking on the relevant flag on the main page. Some people have said that the Spanish version of the site is a lot more reliable than the English version. I've managed to buy tickets using both versions but whichever version you use neither are very user-friendly or reliable. You may have to try several times and you'll need a fair bit of patience to complete the process. The government are close to updating this website using a more professional version so we'll keep you informed when this happens. For the time being you'll have to struggle with the current version, hopefully the information provided below will help you with the process and keep your sanity. If all fails just buy a package tour with a local operator!
Visit the official website www.machupicchu.gob.pe (Ministry of Culture)
After closing any pop-ups you should have a screen that looks like this.
The default version is in Spanish. To select the English version just click on the British flag. The screen should now look like this:
RESERVATION Step 1. Select type of ticket, departure date & quantity
Select which type of ticket you want, the date and the quantity of tickets
Make sure that you have the RESERVATION tab selected
Drop down menu: Visit place, select MACHUPICCHU
Drop down menu: Select Entry Route, you will be shown the following options:
- Machupicchu - this is the standard entrance ticket to Machu Picchu
- Machupicchu + Huaynapicchu 1G 7:00 - 8:00am (Machu Picchu plus climbing Huayna Picchu, first group starting between 7-8am
- Machupicchu + Huaynapicchu 2G 10:00 - 11:00am (Machu Picchu plus climbing Huayna Picchu, first group starting between 7-8am)
- Machupicchu + Montaña 7:00am -11:00am (Machu Picchu plus climbing up Machu Picchu Mountain starting between 7-11am)
- Machupicchu Horario Vespertino 13:00 horas (Entry to Machu Picchu after 1pm only)
Select the type of entrance ticket that you want. For this example we will select the first option Machupicchu which is the standard entrance ticket to Machu Picchu.
Select the date that you want to enter Machu Picchu using the calendar.
Tip: Enero=January Febrero=February Marzo=March Abril=April Mayo=May Junio=June Julio=July Agosto=August Septiembre=September Octubre=October Noviembre=November Diciembre=December
For this example I will select the 08 August 2016 - see screen shot below. Towards the top of the page is a grey box with white numbers inside with the word Availability written over the top. This tells you how many entrance tickets are available for the date that you have selected. The maximum number of tickets available is 2500. Obviously if it is zero then all the tickets have sold out and you will have to select another date.
Now select how many tickets you want. Assuming that you are a foreign visitor then just click on the "0" under the Quantity column in the Foreign Category Row. Once you have clicked on the "0" you can then select how many tickets you want. Note that you can only select Adult tickets online. There is no option for students.
When you have correctly selected the right quality of tickets that you require click on the Step 2 button.
RESERVATION Step 2: Fill in your personal details
Fill in your personal details as they appear in your passport. Details required are name, last name, gender (sex), country, age, type of travel document (PAS - PASAPORTE), Document
number (fill in your passport number).
When selecting a country from the drop down menu you will note that the country names are in Spanish.
There isn't an option for United Kingdom (Reino Unido) or Great Britain (Gran Britaña) but just Inglaterra = England. Unfortunately the Scots, Welsh & Northern Irish will have to select Inglaterra to get a ticket.
Inglaterra= United Kingdom
Estados Unidos = United States
Holanda = Netherlands
Irlanda = Ireland
Suecia = Sweden
Suiza = Switzerland
The other countries should be fairly obvious.
Once complete double check the details. The names and passport numbers cannot be changed at a later date and will be checked against your entrance ticket when you enter Machu Picchu. The ticket date cannot be changed for another date once you have paid so take your time to make sure this information is correct before proceeding to the next stage.
Click on the Step 3 button. This will generate a pop-up showing you the booking terms and conditions which you can read and then close.
RESERVATIONS Step 3 Fill in Contact information.
If all is going well you should be looking at the Contact Information page. Select the person who will be responsible for the booking and fill in your address. Tick the two check boxes: The provided information is correct & I read and accept the terms and conditions. You can now click on the BOOK button.
After clicking the BOOK button and you will hopefully receive confirmation of your booking in the form of a pop-up that looking a bit like this:
This BOOKING FORM is not an entrance ticket.
The BOOKING FORM has all your booking details and a reservation code (Reserva). Print this document out. If you can't print it out at least make sure all the details are correct and make a note of your reservation code (the code circled above)
You can now close the BOOKING FORM pop-up and you should be left with a screen that looks similar to that shown below. You have now completed the initial reservation process, now you have to pay for the tickets
PAYMENTS Step 1
You received your booking code in the previous stage. In the above screen shot it is shown again in green. You can copy the code onto you clipboard.
Now click on the PAYMENTS tab at the top of the page. You can now paste you booking code into the blank box
Then click on the Pay button
This will take you to a screen as show below with your booking details and total cost. Note that only at this stage does the government add an administrative charge (gastos administativos)
If the details are correct then click on the ENVIAR (SEND) button.
PAYMENTS Step 2 - Payment online VISA Merchant website
Click on the ENVIAR (SEND) button will take you to a webpage on the VISA Merchant website. The root of the website address should read www.multimerchantvisanet.com This is the official VISA payment portal in Peru although it doesn't exactly inspire you with confidence. You can only pay using VISA and NOT MasterCard or American Express.
Just enter your card details and click on Pay. This will then take you through a card verification process known as Verified by VISA. You are probably already familiar this verification process as this process is used worldwide. You will be asked to enter your Verified by Visa password to complete the transaction. You will receive confirmation that your payment has been successful (Pago Exitoso)
That's the payment stage over.
CHECK-IN Step 1
Return to the website www.machupicchu.gob.pe and click on the CHECK-IN tab. Enter you reservation code into the box and click Buscar (search). The system should have recognized that you have paid for your tickets and an updated copy of your Machu Picchu Entrance Tickets will be available to print out. If the system doesn't recognize that you have paid then wait a few hours and try again. I assume that this is an automated system but there is always the chance that it isn't so you may have to wait a while between paying and printing your tickets out. If there are any problems visit the call centre http://www.drc-cusco.gob.pe/callcenteresp1
You should now be the proud owner of a Machu Picchu Entrance Ticket. Hooray!
When you visit Machu Picchu remember to take a copy of the Entrance Ticket and a copy of your original passport (the number on the passport must match the passport number written on the Entrance Ticket). During the purchase process VISA also state that you must be able to show at the entrance the same VISA credit/payment card that you used to pay for the tickets. I guess this is a fraud prevention measure and they say you won't be allowed in if you don't take it so it's very important.
